Gorman's 41 send Neptune to final four |
DCU Saints 97 - 114 Neptune
Game date: 3/22/2008 |
Neptune travelled to Dublin for hoping to make our first appearance at the finals weekend since the Conference system was brought in. We've been improving steadily as Kyle Myrick fitted in over the last couple of months, but DCU have been the form team in the league since Christmas and there's no question that this was the tougher of the quarter finals.
Gamble and McNeill opened brightly for DCU as Neptune took some time to find their range. When shots aren't falling though you have to scrap for your scores and that's just what Kieran O'Brien and Matt Gorman did, causing havoc on the offensive boards to keep Neptune even. At the end of the first Neptune held a narrow 25 - 26 lead.
In the second Matt Gorman took over and blew DCU away. He exploded for 20 points in the period, scoring inside and from distance. To be honest this kind of performance has been coming for a while from Matt, and DCU were unfortunate to be on the wrong end. Kieran O'Brien continued to be a handful on the offensive glass, creating second chances any time Neptune actually missed a shot. By half time Neptune had put a further 41 on the board, and lead 46 - 67.
Kyle Myrick's ability to control the game from the point had gotten his team into the lead, and as DCU came after turnovers Myrick's fabulous ball handling abilities meant that Neptune played at the pace we wanted and did not allow DCU back into it. All season we've been throwing away big leads, but with Kyle able to create such easy scores for himself and others, Neptune were able to maintain the lead through the second half. Neptune also remained dominant in the paint. DCU made a couple of bursts but were never able to get close enough to seriously threaten the lead and Neptune ran out winners by 97 - 114. Matt Gorman lead all scorers with 41, Kieran O'Brien had a season high 24 and Kyle Myrick was superb, scoring 22 and running the whole show for Neptune. Pete Madsen lead DCU with a game effort of 26, and former Neptune Superleague winner Kenny Gamble had 23.
Neptune march on to a semi-final against Tralee in Limerick next weekend with a lot of optimism. After dispatching such a tough opponent as DCU, no one will hold any fears for this side. Also, we'd like to wish all the best to DCU coach Joey Boylan, who announced his retirement from coaching after the match. Joey has contributed enormously to Irish basketball over many years and he'll be greatly missed in the Superleague and by St. Vincents club. |
