No luck at Championship finals |
A disappointing Championship finals weekend started for Neptune with a loss in the Division 1 final on Friday night. Neptune got off to a good start, but failed to drive home the advantage and Demons deep bench pulled them back into the game. It was close down to the last few minutes, but Demons stretched away at the end for a 59 - 49 win.
The Under 14's started well against Ballincollig, and lead a low-scoring game 13 - 10 with a couple of minutes remaining in the first half. Ballincollig put in an excellent stretch though and reeled off 10 unanswered for a 13 - 20 half time lead. Neptune struggled to get back into it despite a superb effort from Aaron Hosford, and were unable to get closer than the 6 point final margin, losing out 35 - 41.
Next up were the Under 12's, who were taking on Fr. Mathews. Fr. Mathews started very well, and lead 12 - 3 at the end of the first quarter. Neptune cut into it in the second, with baskets from Craig Williams, and trailed by just 5 at the break. Fr. Mathews defense was outstanding in the second half though, and it carried them away from Neptune to win 35 - 14.
Finally the Under 16's also faced off against Ballincollig. Neptune got off to a decent start and lead 13 - 9 at the end of the first quarter, but Ballincollig rallied in the second and lead 22 - 24 at half time. They edged out the margin further to 33 - 38 by the end of the third quarter. In the fourth Ballincollig's depth started to tell and as we had to start chasing they executed well, producing a 21 point 4th quarter for a 45 - 59 win.
Not a single win out of four finals was a disappointing weekend, but reaching 4 finals was an achievement in itself, especially for the Under 12's who are improving at an impressive rate in the second half of the season.
Hard luck to all the players and coaches involved, and many thanks to all the parents, friends and other club members who came to support the teams. |
