Superleague Playoffs in sight |
A third win of the year over DCU Saints on Saturday has left Neptune in a strong second place in the South Conference, needing just one win in our last three games to guarantee a playoff spot.
Abrakebabra Tralee's loss at the weekend means that they cannot catch us anymore. Shamrock Rovers Hoops can still pass us and Limerick Lions can tie us. The only scenario that puts us out is if Lions win all their games and Hoops win three of their four (losing only their home game to Limerick), plus we would need to lose the tie-breakers to those teams.
Limerick are 4 - 10 for the season, and would need to run the board for their last 4 games catch us. Their 4 are Tralee away, Star at home, ourselves away and Hoops away. Lions 1 - 5 record on the road this year suggests that 3 away wins are unlikely, but nothing is impossible and a -2.6 point differential for the season despite so many losses shows that they have been competitive in most games. However, 4 out of 4 is probably beyond them.
All of which says we're more than likely to at least be in the playoffs, so our main fight is with Hoops to get a home quarter final. There will be a big difference between hosting Belfast Star or DCU and travelling to UCD Marian, leaving a lot to earn still.
As they would say in the NBA, we're two and a half games ahead of Hoops at the moment, and a win over the Dublin side at home on Saturday would ensure a home quarter-final. The win may be required, because Hoops other games do look winnable if they manage to put together a run of good form. Their four games are ourselves away, DCU at home, Limerick at home and a refixed game against Star at home has to be fitted in as well. The trip to Neptune Stadium looks like the most difficult task. Star and DCU at home are winnable, and they should beat Limerick as well.
So, it may well turn out that next Sunday decides whether or not we get that all-important home quarter final. It would be the first time since the conference system was brought in that we've managed to be at home for the first round, so we're hoping everyone will be in for the later-than-usual tip-off at 16:30. |
