Under 14 Clubs All Ireland |
The Under 14 Club All Ireland is taking place over the weekend of the 18th and 19th of April in the University of Limerick Arena. Neptune is one of two Cork teams competing against representatives from all the area boards in the country.
Neptune were drawn in a pool with Springfield from Limerick and St. Bridgets from Kerry. There are 4 pools and the way the competition is set up only the pool winners can win the tournament, so two wins were required. We opened with a win, which looked good on the scoreboard but featured a lot of loose play. Emmet Keoghan did the damage early with some good drives to the basket, and finished with 12. Colm Dennehy contributed 8 off the bench and Evan Lordan and Ross Mulcahy distributed the ball extremely well.
The St. Bridgets game was much tighter, and our execution had to improve to overcome a team that was generally bigger and stronger. We started well, protecting our key very well and getting out on the break. Emmet again provided the scoring punch, driving Neptune to an early 11 - 2 lead in the first quarter.
The rest of the game stayed relatively even, as St. Bridgets zone caused some problems. Occasionally quick ball movement created easy opportunities, but some poor finishing meant we never extended the gap. Good effort on defense meant that our opponents could not get any closer than 7 points though, and we ran out 35 - 25 winners. Emmet finished with 14 and Zach Urbanek got 7, as well as negating Bridgets big men. Aaron Hosford was as active as always on defense and Jamie Beadle came off the bench to raise the tempo when we looked sluggish in the middle of the game.
All fixtures and results for the championship are available on Basketball Ireland's site here.
We play again tomorrow morning at 09:30 against Kubs from Dublin, who've come through their group with two impressive wins over Claregalway and Oldcastle. The final, if we make it, will be at 13:15. |
